Description
These multimedia materials were curated for the exhibition Dhun / Dhūnī: The Fires of the Name, presented at the University of Vienna in at the YDYS conference in Paris in 2026, and for the accompanying Multimedia Essay on the OMnibus of MANTRAMS. They show Rāmānandī ascetics undertaking prolonged disciplines of ritual heat, at times sitting within circles of smouldering cow dung beneath the intense summer sun while silently repeating the name of Rām. Simultaneously, the choice of media (1971 Beaulieu 4008 ZM II moving-picture camera using Kodak Ektachrome 100 diapositive colour film stock; 35mm black-and-white Leica M Monochrom photography; deliberate sound composition) engages artistically with the practice, attempting to approximate the immersive acoustic conditions and multisensory intensity of the setting.

The recordings were co-produced during ethnographic fieldwork at the Kumbha Melā and elsewhere in North India in close collaboration with the individuals depicted, namely Mouni Bābā, Śāstrījī Mahārāj, Śri Rāmadāsjī, Ānanda Dāsa, Phalharī Dāsa Bābājī, Gopal Dāsa, Jagannāth Dāsa, Vināyaka Dāsa Tyāgī, Rām Bālak Dāsa, Jagadīśa Dāsa Mahātyāgī, and many more. These members of Rāmānandī asceticism have not just consented to being recorded but were instrumental in assessing the quality and value of the raw footage. However, since the material leans less towards documentary and more towards artistic interpretation, Prema Goet holds sole responsibility over all creative choices made.
