Literary Works With Self-Annotations 1300-1900
Description
This collection offers an overview of literary works published between 1300 and 1900 that contain self-annotations, i.e. marginal notes, footnotes, or endnotes written by the author of the work. Due to the focus of my PhD thesis, most of the works listed here are English poems published between 1700 and 1830. The collection does not raise any claims to completeness, nor does it provide enough data for quantitative research. Rather, the purpose of this collection is threefold: (1) It is meant to highlight the prevalence and diversity of pre-1900 literary self-annotation. (2) It allows tentative answers about certain trends in self-annotation, e.g. the shift from footnotes to endnotes around the 1810s. (3) It hopefully serves as a starting point for further investigations on literary self-annotation.
