Locke in Brazil. Property and Labour in German Migration Literature
Description
According to nineteenth-century German-language literature on Brazil, the prospect of acquiring property was a driving force behind emigration to the South American country. Yet only those willing to engage in hard work, it was believed, could become property owners. To understand this connection between property and labor, as well as its colonial implications, one must go back to the “father” of liberalism, John Locke.
