Variable Binding was used as an experimental tool in order to investigate the degree of integration of German peripheral adverbial clauses introduced by adversative während 'while, whereas' and by concessive obwohl 'although', and German central adverbial clauses, introduced by temporal während 'while' and temporal nachdem 'after', into their main clauses.
