Does the crosslinguistic comparison of motion verb constructions facilitate learning? Evidence from a randomized controlled trial in authentic Spanish classes (Poster presentation at EuroSLA35)

Authors/Creators

Description

This poster presents the key findings of the randomized controlled trial 'Crosslinguistic Usage-Based Constructional Instruction (CrossUBICon)', which was conducted from April to November 2025 in sixteen Spanish classes in southern Germany. The study examined the effectiveness of comparing prepositions in motion-related constructions across different languages in an authentic instructional setting.

Funding for the project was provided by the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes) and the LEAD Graduate School and Research Network at the University of Tübingen. Additional support was offered by the German Society for Foreign Language Research (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Fremdsprachenforschung (DGFF)), the Leibniz Institute for Knowledge Media (IWM), and the Romance Department at the University of Tübingen.

The poster will be presented at the 35th annual conference of the European Second Language Association (EUROSLA35) at NOVA University Lisbon on Friday 26 June.

Accuracy
The poster presents the key findings of the data analysis from the cloze test conducted at four different time points. Furthermore, it summarizes students' perceptions of the comparison of plurilingual constructions. A preregistration including a detailed statistical analysis plan was published in the REES repository in May 2025. Kanli, E., Wiesinger, E., Wolf, J., Meurers, D., Sering, K., Berens, F.
