Data for Multiple sluicing through an experimental lens: Amelioration effects, crosslinguistic variation, and processing
Description
This dissertation investigates the acceptability status and amelioration factors affecting multiple sluicing in English, German, and Spanish in three experiment series. The two methods that have been used are acceptability judgment studies (AJS) on a 7-point scale, and a self-paced reading study (SPR).
Experiment Series 1 investigates the factors PREPOSITIONHOOD (swh2 is either prepositional or nominal) and WEIGHT (swh2 is either bare, explicit, (or heavy))
- Experiment 1: AJS in English. 2x3 design with PREPOSITIONHOOD and WEIGHT as factors
- Experiment 1': AJS in English. 2x2 design with PREPOSITIONHOOD and WEIGHT as factors
- Experiment 2: AJS in German. 2x2 design with PREPOSITIONHOOD and WEIGHT as factors
- Experiment 3: AJS in German. 2x2 design with PREPOSITIONHOOD and WEIGHT as factors
Experiment Series 2 investigates the factors CLAUSMATENESS (swh1 and swh2 originate within the same clause (i.e., clausemate) or across clause boundaries (i.e., non-clausemate) and ISLANDHOOD (the embedded clause is either an island or a non-island).
- Experiment 1: AJS in English. 2x2 design with CLAUSEMATENESS and ISLANDHOOD as factors
- Experiment 2: AJS in German. 2x2 design with CLAUSEMATENESS and ISLANDHOOD as factors
- Experiment 3: AJS in Spanish. 2x2 design with CLAUSEMATENESS and ISLANDHOOD as factors
- Experiment 4: SPR in German. 1x3 design with CLAUSEMATENESS (only clausemate) and ISLANDHOOD (non-island, adjunct island, and subject island)
Experiment Series 3 investigates the factors SOURCE (the elliptic clause is a short paraphrase of the antecedent or a full copy of the antecedent), SHIFTINESS (the subject in the embedded clause is either and shift or non-shifty), and EMBEDDING TYPE (the embedded clause in the antecedent is a relative clause (RC) or a complement of noun clause (NCC))
- Experiment 1: AJS in German. 2x2 design with SOURCE and SHIFTINESS as factors
- Experiment 2: AJS in German. 2x2 design with SOURCE and EMBEDDING TYPE as factors
- Experiment 3: AJS in Spanish. 2x2 design with SOURCE and EMBEDDING TYPE as factors

All the experiments in Experiment Series 3 were funded by Dr. James Griffiths, Junior Professor in English Linguistics, Englisches Seminar, University of Tübingen.
Prof. Dr. Holden Härtl, Chair of English Linguistics, English Linguistics, University of Kassel, funded Experiment 4 in Experiment Series 2.
