Actor-centered North-South research on sustainable agriculture in times of pandemics – challenges and options

Description

This contribution provides methodological and research ethical insights into a digital study which originally had been planned as a 'classic' field stay in Tanzania. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, content, organization, and methodological approach had to be shifted according to opportunities and limitations that digital tools provide.

I will provide a systematized description of research ethics responsibilities by presenting my own case study as part of my PhD research. The research process of shifting an ethnographic fieldwork approach is reflected on three levels (the case study level, the research ethics level, and the research policy level) and demonstrates which research ethical questions challenge this shift and the resulting digital research.

Additionally, some general guidelines are suggested to inspire researchers who are grappling with the question of whether online research or a field stay is a more appropriate approach to their research.
